A Natural Product that does Wonders

Diatomaceous earth is an all natural product that is food grade and meets U.S. Food chemicals codex standards.

It’s listed safe for organic use and is safe for human or animal consumption.  Because it is packaged professionally using stainless steel equipment, there are no contaminants in it to mess things up and alter its food grade properties.

You may be wondering what this has to do with flea control. It may surprise you to know that diatomaceous earth is an excellent means of fighting flea problems.

This wonder earth is forms from algae and has silicone siliceous shells.  They’re already dead when it’s extracted but the shells are left behind. These shells are like razors but are too small to have any kind of effect at all on humans.

However there isn’t much deadlier to pests than diatomaceous earth. It cuts their exoskeleton which is the outer shell and the water is sucked from their bodies. Fleas need water to live, so they die without water in their bodies.  Food grade Diatomaceous earth is also great for getting rid of chiggers, bed bugs and other pests in your home.

What does it Kill/Repel

Diatomaceous Earth kills fleas and many other types of pests like bed bugs, chiggers and similar type pests.  It is a very effective means of reducing the flea population drastically.

Speed of Results

You will start to see some progress when it comes to killing the fleas within about 4 hours but it is better to leave it on any carpets or floors inside for a minimum of 12 hours. Then it can be vacuumed up thoroughly and the dead fleas along with it.

Application Method and Instructions

Diatomaceous Earth ingThere are a few different ways that you can use diatomaceous earth to kill the fleas in your home. We’ve outlined the simple steps to one of the more popular methods below.

  1. Prepare your carpet for treatment by using a stiff brush on them. What this does is get the fleas moving around, aggravated which makes them ready for the DE attack.
  2. Sprinkle the DE wherever you notice that there are fleas. Common places will be the carpets in your home; the pet’s sleeping quarters, and where they like to play.
  3. Once the DE is sprinkled everywhere you want it to be, take a push broom and work it slowly into the carpet as much as possible. You want to use enough DE to be effective but not so much that you are in engulfed in a white powder cloud.
  4. Leave it on for at least 4 hours but 12 is optimum if you can do it.
  5. Vacuum up all the remaining powder and loose fleas to make sure they die. Your vacuum bag should be disposed of properly outside in a safe trash can. Never leave the vacuum bag in the vacuum since the tiny fleas might be able to escape.

Things to Watch Out for

When it comes to using diatomaceous earth, there are a few things to remember and watching out for. Even though some people rub it on their pets to control the flea problem, DE can dry out their skin and cause a lot of itchiness.

DE shouldn’t be anywhere close to very small kittens, puppies, ferrets, rabbits, hamsters, and other small animals.  Because they are so small, it can be very dangerous to them.

Don’t use the pool grade diatomaceous earth.  The food grade is the best one to use and should be the only one you use. Remember that if you have allergies or asthma, the fine, powdery form of DE can irritate your airways. If you have to work with it, be sure to have your inhaler nearby in case you need it.

Keep our diatomaceous earth away from moisture and don’t sprinkle it on damp carpets, floors, or grasses if you’re using it outside.  It reduces the effectiveness of it. Also remember not to turn on any ceiling fans, regular fans or even the AC while you are treating your home with DE. You don’t want the fine granules all over the house. When using this product, especially outside, you want to use goggles and a respirator or mask for protection so you don’t breathe in the powdery substance.

Safe for Pets and Children to be Around?

Food grade diatomaceous earth is completely safe for children and pets. There is nothing in it at all that is dangerous or toxic to your pets or your kids.
